Alberta's Oil and Gas History
Leduc No. 1   On February 13, 1947 Imperial Oil drillers discovered a huge oil field which opened up the region to tremendous oil exploration and petroleum discoveries.

This discovery heralded the shift of Alberta’s seventy-year-old agricultural economy to a resource-based economy.

All production, which had been in decline, expanded dramatically and the Edmonton area became a petrochemical distribution center. This iconic photograph of Leduc No. 1 is one of the most famous photographs in Alberta’s history.
